Install switches with a large toggle or push button at a lower height, and you can use Motion detector lights for the individuals who have trouble accessing light switches. Lighting is another safety precaution that you should take care of. You should plan in such a way that there is even lighting to avoid shadows and glares. Place all the necessary things near the toilet seat such as toilet paper, sanitary products, wipes, and medical equipment. To maintain safe water temperature and volume, install anti-scald mixing valves.

CHAPTER 10: RECREATION FACILITIES

Where a total of four or fewer parking spaces, including accessible parking spaces, are provided on a site, identification of accessible parking spaces shall not be required. An accessible route shall not be required to press boxes in bleachers that have points of entry at only one level provided that the aggregate area of all press boxes is 500 square feet maximum. Accessible routes must connect all spaces and elements required to be accessible including, but not limited to, raised areas and speaker platforms.

Nosings that project beyond risers shall have the underside of the leading edge curved or beveled. Risers shall be permitted to slope under the tread at an angle of 30 degrees maximum from vertical. The permitted projection of the nosing shall extend 1 1/2 inches maximum over the tread below. The method and color of marking are not specified by these requirements but may be addressed by State or local laws or regulations.

Doors, Doorways, and Gates

A “cluster” is a group of toilet rooms proximate to one another. Generally, toilet rooms in a cluster are within sight of, or adjacent to, one another. Where drinking fountains are provided on an exterior site, on a floor, or within a secured area they shall be provided in accordance with 211. Elevators provided for passengers shall comply with 407.

Roll dispensers are much better and more recommended than folded tissue dispensers since folded tissue dispensers require us to use our finger to pinch the tissue.

The required clearance must be located so that it aligns with the control wall and extends 12″ minimum from the seat wall. This allows proper alignment with the seat for transfer from wheelchairs. No elements, including lavatories, can overlap this clearance as they would impede transfer. The seat wall or the flange around the face of prefabricated showers may slightly offset the clearance from the shower. It is important that this offset be minimized and to limit the gap between the clearance and the edge of the seat (which must extend to a point within 3″ of the compartment entry). When designing play components with manipulative or interactive features, consider appropriate reach ranges for children seated in wheelchairs.

Mezzanines have sufficient elevation that space for human occupancy can be provided on the floor below. A short ramp cutting through a curb or built up to it. A standardized surface feature built in or applied to walking surfaces or other elements to warn of hazards on a circulation path. Interior or exterior circulation paths, rooms, spaces, or elements that are not for public use and are made available for the shared use of two or more people. Describes spaces and elements specifically designed for use primarily by people 12 years old and younger.

Electrical or communication receptacles serving a dedicated use shall not be required to comply with 309. Sites, buildings, facilities, and elements are exempt from these requirements to the extent specified by 203. There can be multiple areas containing a primary function in a single building. Primary function areas are not limited to public use areas. For example, both a bank lobby and the bank’s employee areas such as the teller areas and walk-in safe are primary function areas. Building or facility designed and used for the purpose of renting or leasing individual storage spaces to customers for the purpose of storing and removing personal property on a self-service basis.

Toilet paper dispensers shall comply with 309.4 and shall be 7 inches minimum and 9 inches maximum in front of the water closet measured to the centerline of the dispenser. The outlet of the dispenser shall be 15 inches minimum and 48 inches maximum above the finish floor and shall not be located behind grab bars. Dispensers shall not be of a type that controls delivery or that does not allow continuous paper flow. Further, the residential dwelling units provided must be dispersed according to HUD’s Section 504 criteria.

Also, remember that wheelchairs make 180-degree turns, so anything less than 60 inches is a problem. If wheelchair access is not necessary, the bathroom can be 30 inches wide and 48 inches deep. Smaller spaces will be harder to work with, but you can do it. ArchDaily shares an ADA restroom guide that shows several floor plans in different sizes. It is important that the grab bar on the control wall of a transfer shower extend close to the shower entry so that it is usable from outside the compartment for transfer. A maximum horizontal distance between the grab bar and the entry is not specified in the Standards.

To fit in the ADA criteria, one has to follow all the basic rules and regulations regarding the equipment. This applies to the exterior (i.e the entrance) and the interiors of the ADA bathroom. These types of bathrooms are well established in hotels, motels, and dormitories.
